The studio leads 3 day residential placements, and training, at their studio in south-east Wales. Small groups of creative and dedicated students can work with Charles to learn about fresco, create their own practice pieces, and acquire skills to assist with a significant fresco installation in the students’ local area. Each placement is exciting, enlightening and practical, and allows students to work with a professional artist and to gain experience of real world, industry-based briefs that go beyond their course material.

The expectations of students on the foundation programme demand that staff make space for changes to modes of teaching and delivery. Opportunities like that made possible by the external project with Aster Muro positively supports this rationale. In addition it gives students the opportunity to “try out” what they know in the context of a “real job” which is a rare and unique situation.

For a recent MediaCityUK commission, Aster Muro ran a successful placement with a group of 4 brilliant students from Manchester School of Art (MSA) who then went on to assist with the live installation. Visit our Films page to watch films of the studio practice and the installation day.

This teaching and collaboration model also serves as an opportunity for developers and project organisers, who are considering art installations, to forge local connections and to make a positive contribution to their community. To enquire about setting up a partnership for an installation please contact the studio.

Our foundation students were provided with a fabulous opportunity to work on an industry-based brief alongside Aster Muro, as they completed their biggest commission to date. Throughout the project, the students were presented with an invaluable experience and were able to observe the technical, complex processes of a highly skilled professional artist at work. The partnership has been a real success.

The three day placement opportunity was a wonderful experience. Charles was kind enough to let us into his studio and show us his creative process. We were able to create our own 2x2m abstract pieces under his guidance and we were keen to learn and ask questions about Aster Muro’s practices. Charles was enthusiastic to share his past experiences with us and to learn about our own backgrounds and plans for the future.
